How to

Connect the bank with a bank feed

How an owner or treasurer connects a bank account through Flinks, chooses where each account goes in the books, brings in new transactions, and disconnects.

With a bank feed, the bank's transactions come into the books without downloading a file. You sign in to the bank through Flinks, a Canadian company that connects to Canadian banks and credit unions. Core1440 never sees the bank password.

What comes in is sorted the same way as a bank file: matched to an entry, made into an entry, or left out. See Bring in your bank's file and sort it.

Steps

In short: an owner or treasurer connects the bank, chooses where each account goes, then anyone who records in the books brings in new transactions and sorts them.

Connect the bank

Only an owner or treasurer can do this.

  1. Open Books, then the books, then press Bank files.
  2. Under Bank feeds, press Connect a bank account.
  3. Choose the bank and sign in the way you do for online banking. This happens in Flinks' window, not in Core1440.
  4. Back in Core1440, press Save the connection.

Choose where each account goes

The bank's accounts are listed under Where each account goes.

  1. Beside each one, choose the account in the books it's for, for example the chequing account or the credit card.
  2. Choose Don't bring in for an account the books don't keep, like a pastor's personal account.
  3. Press Save.

Bring in new transactions

  1. Under Bank feeds, open the bank.
  2. Press Bring in new transactions.
  3. Go back to Bank files and sort them, as you would a file.

Anything already brought in, by the feed or by a file, isn't brought in twice, so it's safe to press as often as you like.

Disconnect

  1. Open the bank under Bank feeds.
  2. Press Disconnect the bank feed.

The bank sign-in is forgotten. Transactions it brought in stay in the books, with what was done with them.

If something goes wrong

  • "The bank connection needs to be signed in to again": banks ask for this from time to time, or after a password change. Disconnect, then connect the bank again. What came in before stays.
  • "The bank is taking a while to answer": wait a few minutes, then press Bring in new transactions again.
  • Bank feeds aren't turned on: your Core1440 hasn't been set up for feeds yet. Bring in a statement file instead.
  • The bank shows another account: a new account at the bank appears under Where each account goes. Choose where it goes and press Save.

Good to know

  • Flinks keeps the connection to the bank in Canada. The transactions are stored by Core1440 in Canada.
  • A feed usually goes back 90 days the first time. For older months, bring in a statement file.
  • Bookkeepers and accountants can bring in new transactions, but only an owner or treasurer can connect, choose accounts or disconnect.
